PTC’s Karen Avelino, Executive Director of Business Development for Shipping and Senior Vice President of Cruise Operations, spoke at the Joint Maritime Committee meeting on March 26 at the German Club, where she shared her journey and insights on Women in Maritime.

Opening her talk with a personal reflection—“I am a woman in maritime, a mother, a grandmother, a marathoner”— Ms. Avelino recalled being “in rooms where I was the only woman.” Rather than be discouraged, she emphasized, “I will not let my gender define my limitations. I will let my work define my value.” She highlighted that true equality means “equal opportunity, access, and chance to succeed,” underscoring that consistency and competence ultimately earn recognition.

She noted that while more opportunities are now open to women across the industry, sustained progress depends on greater participation and leadership. “Real change happens when more women enter, stay, and lead,” she said, encouraging continuous learning and growth: “Competence keeps you in the room.”

Closing with a message of empowerment, Ms. Avelino reminded participants that “the future of maritime is not defined by gender, but by capability, character, and commitment,” urging women to seize opportunities and strive not just to start strong, but to finish well.

The session also featured Capt. Igal Dafni of Iris Lines, who shared insights on the current situation in the Middle East and its impact on global shipping.
