Ahead of the International Day of the Seafarer, maritime stakeholders, industry leaders, advocates, educators, media personalities, and seafarers gathered at Museo del Galeón in Pasay City on June 22, 2026, for the inaugural Seafarer Social Summit 2026. The landmark event served as a platform to recognize the invaluable contributions of Filipino seafarers to global trade while fostering meaningful discussions on the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of the maritime profession.

The summit opened with a welcome address from Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac, who underscored the critical role of Filipino seafarers in the global economy. This was followed by a keynote presentation, The Philippines on the Global Maritime Stage, delivered by Catherine Logie of One Ocean and Lloyd’s Register, highlighting the country’s continued leadership in providing world-class maritime talent. Participants also gained a deeper appreciation of the nation’s maritime heritage through The Story of Museo del Galeón, which offered a seafarer’s perspective on the significance of preserving the Philippines’ rich seafaring history.

The day featured a series of insightful panel discussions and presentations addressing key aspects of seafarers’ lives and careers. Veteran journalist Susan Enriquez of GMA Network moderated several sessions, including the panel on Financial Literacy for Seafarers, where experts discussed strategies for financial preparedness and long-term security. TV personality and mental health advocate Kuya Kim Atienza delivered an engaging talk on family, mind, and body, emphasizing the importance of mental wellness, healthy relationships, and resilience among maritime professionals. Capt. Ronald Enrile, PTC Senior Adviser of the PTC Shipping Cluster, then took the stage for a presentation on The Filipino Seafarer Today, sharing insights into the current realities, opportunities, and challenges faced by Filipino seafarers.

Discussions continued with a panel on Family, Relationships and Life Between Contracts, which explored the importance of maintaining strong family connections while working at sea. Among the panelists was 3/E Marianne Camille Alpuerto, Education and Training Officer of PHILCAMSAT. Participants also heard from Dr. Conrado F. Oca of AMOSUP, who delivered a special address highlighting the organization’s continuing efforts to advance seafarer welfare and protection.

Industry trends and future developments were likewise explored through a series of expert-led discussions. Steven Jones and Ben Bailey of Mission to Seafarers presented findings from the Seafarer Happiness Index Q1 2026, providing valuable insights into the well-being of seafarers worldwide. Representatives from GARD, NorthStandard, and UK P&I joined Filipino maritime professionals for a discussion on defining and measuring success in a seafaring career.

Looking ahead, Capt. Pol Haboc, Vice President of PHILCAMSAT, led the session Future: Where Filipino Seafaring Goes Next, offering perspectives on the evolving opportunities available to Filipino maritime professionals. The summit also examined the growing influence of innovation through AI, Technology and the Changing Ship, hosted by Peter Schellenberger, which explored how digital transformation and artificial intelligence are reshaping maritime operations and future career pathways.

Also among the panelists was C/E Mark Phillip “Chief Makoi” Laurilla, who was also among the champions of this summit. Throughout the event, attendees were given opportunities to network, exchange ideas, and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders from across the maritime sector.

In his closing remarks, Seafarer Social Founder Carl King emphasized that the summit is envisioned as an annual initiative dedicated to keeping seafarers at the center of industry conversations—not merely as contributors, but as honored guests and active participants in shaping the future of the profession.

The event concluded with a thanksgiving dinner at Barbara’s in Intramuros, where participants continued conversations and celebrated the partnerships that made the summit possible. As the maritime industry continues to evolve, the success of the inaugural Seafarer Social Summit lays a strong foundation for future initiatives that support, empower, and elevate the lives and careers of Filipino seafarers.
