The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) reaffirmed its strong commitment to women empowerment and gender inclusivity in the maritime sector during the International Day for Women in Maritime Forum held on May 18 at the Manila Prince Hotel, in collaboration with Women in Maritime Philippines (WIMAPHIL).

Anchored on the theme, “From Policy to Practice: Advancing Gender Equality for Maritime Excellence,” the forum brought together women leaders, maritime professionals, government representatives, and industry stakeholders to recognize and celebrate the growing and vital contributions of women in shaping the future of the maritime industry.

Leading MARINA’s participation, Administrator Sonia Malaluan emphasized the vital role of women in strengthening the maritime workforce and driving sector-wide transformation, reaffirming MARINA’s support for policies that promote equal opportunities, leadership development, and greater participation of women in maritime professions. The forum featured a Women Leaders Panel discussing gender mainstreaming, inclusive workplace practices, and initiatives to enhance women’s visibility, along with an oathtaking ceremony reinforcing commitment to a more inclusive maritime industry. Women leaders from the Philippine Coast Guard, shipping industry, academe, and manning agencies shared insights on their contributions in operations, education, management, security, and policy-making, joined by representatives from maritime institutions in support of advancing gender equality and building a more inclusive and sustainable maritime sector.

Adding a powerful voice from the sea, PTC Global Maritime Professional 2/O Guendelen Chan Penoso, currently sailing onboard Seaspan vessels, was among the featured female seafarers who shared their personal journey through a video message presented during the forum. She spoke candidly about the challenges she faced in her maritime career and how perseverance, resilience, and professional support helped her overcome them—serving as an inspiring reminder of the strength and determination of Filipino women seafarers at sea.

Through stories like hers, the forum further highlighted the real and lived experiences of women in maritime service, reinforcing the importance of continued support systems that enable them to thrive in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
